Man Finds Rare Coin in Driveway

BROADWAY -- John Kipp found a rare coin, more than 250 years old, right in his driveway.

"I was just here raking this gravel back that I had pushed from the driveway and as I was raking all of this gravel back through the grass and back out from the sod. The coin just rolled out from underneath the gravel and laid on its side. I was like, 'All right, I'm 10 cents richer,'" said Kipp.

After examining the coin, it turned out to be more than just a dime.

"I've talked to a few collectors across the United States, one in Michigan, in particular, that deals in shipwrecked coins. He enlightened me and let me know that this is a very rare find."

Kipp decided to look on the Internet to find out more about it.

"Come to find out after doing some research, It was a coin that dates to 1754 and it was stamped for King Ferdinand VI. Its called a pillar coin, stamped in Mexico. This coin was right in the middle of his legacy of being king."

He said it was easy to find out where the coin was from, but now he'd like to know how it got to his house.

"It's kind of interesting to try to figure out and trace back how it got here. Whether it was through soldiers who used to come up through the Valley and some of the wars. The battle of New Market, wherever, soldiers may have stayed here."

He's not exactly sure how much the coin is worth, but to him it's priceless.

"Its a piece of history that's going to stay with me for as long as I'm alive."

Kipp has a few different estimates on how much the coin could be worth. Some dealers offered him a few dollars while others said it could be worth several hundred.
