HARRISONBURG -- Jason Naulty will spend 25 years in prison for brandishing a knife at a police officer.

In November, Naulty was charged with attempting to kill a police officer and sentenced to serve 25 years.

In a court hearing on Tuesday, a motion to lessen that sentence was denied.

Joan Good, Jason Naulty's aunt, is upset the judge wouldn't reconsider his sentence.

"People can go out here and kill people and still get less time. He never harmed nobody. He never touched nobody. He's 10, 15 feet away from people. Two officers and one of them couldn't have tased him? Somebody could've tased him," Good said.

In December 2011, police responded to a call from Naulty's home. His family said he was off his medication and most likely suicidal. When police arrived, they say Naulty was holding a butcher knife and they felt threatened. Police shot Naulty in the stomach three times in response.

Naulty's family said he should get help for his mental illness instead of serving that much time in prison.

"Twenty-five years of life and he's 39 and he's going to be 62 when he gets out. That's a long time for threatening a police officer," said Robert Hickman, Naulty's uncle.

"I know there are people here in Harrisonburg that have mental illness, there's a lot of them. Be careful with your family, watch them good, because this could happen to your family," said Good.

Naulty's family will continue trying to appeal his case. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
