HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- A Harrisonburg man accused of stabbing a co-worker at a poultry plant in Bridgewater pleaded guilty Tuesday in Rockingham County Circuit Court.
Iyad Jawad al Shammari was charged with felony attempted murder and felony malicious wounding.
As part of a deal with prosecutors, the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of felony unlawful wounding.
Rescue crews responded to the Perdue Farms plant on Quality Street 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 for a report of a stabbing.
Prosecutors say al Shammari stabbed Bridgewater resident Elias Gutierrez. The victim was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with serious injuries but survived the attack.
Bridgewater resident Jose Gutierrez, the victim's brother, sustained minor injuries but was not stabbed.
Prosecutors say the confrontation, which stemmed from a domestic dispute, started when Jose Gutierrez punched al Shammari.
With time served, attorneys say, al Shammari should be released from the Rockingham County Jail by the end of the day.
