CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Capitol has added a new chapter to its illustrated history.

The official portrait of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin memorializing his tenure as governor debuted Tuesday.

Manchin and former first lady Gayle Manchin attended the unveiling ceremony along with their children and grandchildren.

The portrait by artist Larry Bruce Bishop shows Manchin with the Capitol's restored gold dome in the background.

The standing-room-only audience included many officials from his administration.

The Democrat was governor from 2005 until winning a 2010 special U.S. Senate election.

The portrait will hang in the governor's Capitol reception room along with that of Manchin's immediate predecessor. The portraits of earlier governors line the Capitol's main corridor.

Manchin's successor, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, led the unveiling ceremony.
