SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (AP) — One Valley man has agreed to a vasectomy in order to shorten his jail sentence by about five years.

Jessie Lee Herald, 27, from Edinburg, is the father of seven children from six different women.

The plea agreement comes from a child endangerment case where Herald ran from police and crashed with his 3-year-old son in the car.

Charles Ramsey, Herald's attorney, said the offer is an unusual one. He hasn't heard of anything like it in his 15 years as a lawyer.

"It was a difficult decision for him, but for a number of reasons that are private to him, he chose to accept it," said Ramsey. "I think that there's this impression in the community that he's a deadbeat dad and that's why the prosecution was pushing for this. He wanted me to get across that that's not the case. He is involved with his kids."

Herald will have a year after being released from prison to get the vasectomy.
