Martinsville had highest jobless rate in May

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Employment Commission says the city's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 10.8 percent. That's down from 11.2 percent in April and down from 12.3 percent a year ago.

The statewide rate for May was 5.4 percent.

Nationally, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for May was 6.1 percent. Rates dropped from last year in 357 metropolitan areas, increased in 11 and were flat in four.

Arlington County had Virginia's lowest jobless rate with 3.7 percent in May.

The Danville region had the highest unemployment rate among Virginia's metropolitan regions at 7.7 percent.

The Washington metropolitan region that includes Arlington and Alexandria had the lowest rate of 4.4 percent.
