A historic event took place at Mary Baldwin College, as the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership saw its first change in leadership in 18 years.

Students, faculty, alumni and others gathered Oct. 17 to watch the change of command parade and ceremony. Authority was transferred to Brigadier General Teresa Djuric from Brigadier General N. Michael Bissell.

"You've been wonderful to work with, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you've done for this corps," said Bissell.

"I certainly cannot express in any more eloquent terms than have been said today the impact that this man has had on us, as cadets and just as human beings," Air Force Captain Trimble Bailey Spitzer said of Bissell. "I am by far a better person and just a better citizen because of you."

"This corps demonstrates every day that they are proud to be the nation's only female cadet corps. ... I want you to know that I am humbled and I am excited to accept the duties of the commandant of cadets," Djuric said.
