MCGAHEYSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) -- Hundreds of Dominion Virginia Power customers have power restored in the valley after 700 customers were in the dark on Sunday.

Dominion Virginia Power spokesman Richard Zuercher said the power outage was caused by a bad switch and an underground cable.

Parts of Massanutten Resort experienced a power outage on Sunday evening.

According to Kenny Hess, Director of Sports and Risk Management, the power went out at 4 p.m.

"We do have backup gasoline and diesel motors to get everybody off the chair lifts, which takes a little while to do. But we did get everyone out safely," said Hess.

Skier John Thomas was on a lift when it happened.

"I was a little nervous at first. I looked over 15 minutes later and one of the other lifts was going but it took us a little longer to get ours going," said Thomas.

Hess said this forced crews to close the ski area at 5:30 p.m. It usually stays open until 9 p.m. on Sundays.
