Massanutten Technical Center Sees Increase in Enrollment

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Enrollment numbers are up at Massanutten Technical Center and students are taking their education to a whole new level.

Kristina Anderson patrols the hallways of Massanutten Technical Center armed with a belt to hold everything she needs to learn what it takes to one day be a homicide detective.

"I come here just to focus on the career I want to do and what it will take to get to my career. It definitely improves learning, "said Anderson.

In the last four years, the center's director Marshall Price said enrollment has gone up, jumping 26 percent from three years ago, and 5 percent this year.

"Students and parents look at the economy and see the jobs and what is available and what jobs are paying, and I believe lots of parents are looking at career for a possibility for their students," said Price.

He said the hands on experience makes their students more competitive in the job market, a pay off for them but also our economy.

"Most of them get good jobs and they give back to the community. That will be the tax base and those are the people working right now doing the housing and major jobs helping our economy," said Price.

Even some adults are coming back to school at MTC, said Price, to add more things to their resume to help them get a job.

"How can I make myself better? How can I move myself up the ladder? They get more training, more certification, and that gives them a better shot," said Price.

Helping get students out of the traditional classroom and into the career field.

More than 850 students from Harrisonburg City Schools and Rockingham County Schools attend Massanutten Technical Center and many of the classes even help student earn college credit.
