HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Todd Haymore will remain as the State Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry.
Haymore is the third cabinet appointee from the current administration that will serve under Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe.
Bob Roberts, a local political analyst, said it is not unusual to reappoint cabinet members, but in this case McAuliffe is choosing Republicans, which has some symbolic reasons.
McAuliffe wants to persuade Republicans in the House of Delegates, showing he is not a partisan and he will not go after them, according to Roberts.
Roberts also said having Republicans in the cabinet may bring GOP delegates to the bargaining table which would be essential when deciding on the Medicaid expansion.
"There is a lot of support for Medicaid expansion among hospitals who are desperate for that money. He is going to have to be able to have his health secretary to go in there and convince them. That this is not a Democratic issue, that is a bipartisan issue," said Roberts.
Bill Hazel is the current Secretary of Health and Human Resources, who was in charge when lawmakers approved the new abortion clinic regulations.
Roberts said McAuliffe may try to repeal those.
"Whether Hazel will go to the mat to try to get those changed. The question is, "Will he undercut the governor?" He must have some assurance from Hazel that he did not agree with these policies," said Roberts.
Roberts also said Hazel could play a key role in convincing republican delegates to discuss expanding Medicaid.
