RICHMOND, Va. (WCAV)-- One of the first witnesses called to testify was Cailin McDonnell. She is the governor's daughter, and also a witness whose wedding catering bill was the tip off the iceburg in this investigation.
She broke down in tears in the courtroom. Cailin McDonnell told prosecutors the night she met Johnnie Williams, he offered to foot the $15,000 bill for catering her wedding. He said if she knew what she knows now, she would never have accepted the offer. She also backed up the defense claims that Bob McDonnell was largely absent from the family; saying she barely saw her father during his time as attorney general or governor.
Maureen's attorneys say the first lady was lonely and isolated. Because of this, she then developed a crush on the Star Scientific CEO, Williams.
The image of a crumbling marriage is key to both Bob and Maureen McDonnell's defense. Prosecutors argued that they conspired together to accept $150,000 in gifts and loans in exchange for promoting Star Scientific products. Although, defense attorneys argue the two were barely on speaking terms while living in the governors mansion. They say Williams used Maureen McDonnell's vulnerability to gain access to a business friendly governor who had no idea what was going on.
This trial is only just getting started. Both Bob McDonnell and Jonnie Williams are expected to testify. It is still unclear though, whether Mrs. McDonnell will take the stand.
