HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Metropolitan Planning Organization is meeting on Tuesday to review updates on several projects, including the drafted bike and pedestrian plan.

The draft of recommendations for the bike and pedestrian plan is being presented to the subcommittee for review.

Kevin McDermott, the Transportation Program Manager with the Central Shenandoah Planning Commission for the Metropolitan Planning Organization, said they have been collecting public feedback for more than a year.

In fact, they received over 1,000 responses on a public poll they released online.

The next step is to present all these ideas to the subcommittee.

McDermott said he hopes we will see both economic and health benefits because of this path.

"One thing I see a lot is companies looking to relocate. They look for these amenities in areas and they like to see a culture that supports this. It also brings more life to a downtown. I think this is the way you see a lot of communities developing these days," said McDermott.

McDermott also said this is an ongoing process and they will continue looking back at recommendations made.

He said we should see some short term projects start construction in the next couple years, including safety and signage improvements.

Others, he said we may not see for about 20 years.
