HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) Thomas Harrison Middle School is starting an initiative called "Fitness Friday."
Students are encouraged to bike and walk to school. Principal Don Vale said that typically the number of students biking to school triples during this event.
Every student spent some time at the beginning of the day Friday walking around the school track. This allowed every student to feel included in staying physically active, even if they live too far to commute.
"Taking that idea that physical fitness and lifelong activities are something that is going to help all of us, especially our children. It does make a difference academically. That is what we are here for, learning for all and trying to help our students be the best that they can," said Vale.
Parents and community members have also gotten involved to make sure students stay safe during this event. The school provided helmets and resources for bike repairs for students that did not have them.
