Mobile Unit Screens for Breast Cancer in Valley

HARRISONBURG (WHSV) -- Women across the Valley are benefiting from a mobile mammography bus.

It's sponsored by Belk and is visiting 232 stores, including those in Harrisonburg, Staunton, and Charlottesville.

For women who have discovered lumps on their own, this chance to get a professional screening is valuable.

"Yes, it was very scary, but I was young. Everybody kept saying, well, you're only 28, so it's probably nothing. It was. I thank God for that,” shared Donna Vinson, who is trying to get a screening set up.

For those working here to help women like Vinson, they say it's a rewarding experience.

"Working here, I get hugs from patients who are in tears, because they can't afford to get this done. This is a way to get it done," shared Emmy Miller, a technologist with the mobile unit.

In its first year, the mobile unit performed more than 4,500 mammograms throughout the Southeast. That resulted in 14 cancer diagnoses that may otherwise have gone undetected.

To get checked out you need an appointment. To get an appointment, call 855-655-BMMC or visit www.belk.com/pink.
