WAYNESBORO, Va -- Ladd Elementary is almost 50 years old and is near a busy intersection. School board members are considering two different plans to redistrict, or move, the students who currently attend the elementary school.

Holly Brown was a student at Ladd Elementary years ago and now her two children are going to school there too, that is, until the end of the school year, when Ladd closes.

“I don't like it,” said Brown, “I'd rather my son go here than anywhere. I went here and the teachers are great.”

The closing will change her family's routine, her children's friends and their schedules.

“It upsets us. It's a great school. I would have never thought they would close.”

The Augusta County School Board has two different plans for redistricting and Assistant Superintendent George Earhart wanted the public's input to help redraw the lines.

“It's extremely important,” said Earhart, “We want to make this transition very smoothly, to go as smoothly as possible. We certainly, our principals have already started thinking about it.”

Brown said the switch to a new school will affect her son, who just started kindergarten.

“He's used to one school, and at the end of the year they're going to redirect him to a different school. He's used to here, and he'll have to get used to somewhere else. So, it's a lot harder on him,” said Brown.

The redistricting is hard on parents too.

“It upsets me. I wish they would tell us a little more about it, but I guess at the end of the year, they will.”

The Augusta County School Board is holding a public hearing Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Ladd Elementary for people to talk about the closing.

The school board is hosting two other public hearings in early December and the members hope to reach a final plan for redistricting by early next year. They hope to avoid school overcrowding when they make a decision on a plan.
