An off leash dog park in Harrisonburg approved by the city council needs at least $10,000 to break ground.

The group proposing the park, Happy Dogs Unleashed, attended Dog Ownership Day at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds hoping to find more support.

Linda Parsons who was at the event said she would like her dog to have more play time with other dogs.

"I think it's great to have dogs interacting together in a confined area where they're safe," she said.

Happy Dogs Unleashed is hoping to create the first off leash park in Harrisonburg.

Member D.D Dawson said the closest one to our area is in Charlottesville.

She said it could bring many benefits.

"It's a chance for your dog to become socialized, it's a chance for you to socialize with other people with dogs," Dawson. It's a chance to exercise your dog, if you don't have a chance to do that and it's the chance for your dog to run free."

Dawson said the group has to raise $10,000 for the project to start.

The group is supposed to raise money for the fence, which costs $16,000.

Janet Windstead is considering helping the cause, after she researchs more about the proposal.

" I think it's wonderful because dogs need to learn how to interact and when you're always jerking them on the leash, they never know how to interact just like with kids," she said.

But parsons said owners have to watch their dogs at all times.

"I think it's a great idea, but i think dog owners have to be responsible and know that their dogs have to be safe to be unleashed," she said.

Dawson said she has heard concerns about dog fights in the park and this place being noisy or smelly.

She said she hopes dog owners will watch over their dogs and make sure they are behaving.
