Harrisonburg -- In our first alert health team. We are officially in mosquito season.
Doctor Doug Larsen is offering advice on getting you through a buggy summer. Dr. Larsen tells WHSV he hasn't seen any cases of west nile virus in the valley. He also says it's very rare to get the virus. About 1 in 1,000 mosquitoes are infected.
Mosquitoes breed in standing water and with all the rain we've seen it's not helping. Dr. Larsen says prevention is key. Limit the number of places around your home where mosquitoes can breed in water.
Install or repair screens. Apply Insect Repellent when outside. Use a repellent with DEET. Wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors this will help with mosquitoe prevention.
