HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A 2-year-old girl is in the hospital after her mother put the car in reverse and rolled on top of her.

Neighbors we spoke with on Johnson Street says it appears to be an accident.

They said the mother was driving a green Toyota when she backed up repeatedly over her 2-year-old daughter.

Police marked the area where the little girl's blood was discovered with spray paint.

Penny Shelley lives near the scene and said she tried to get the mother to stop driving before it was too late.

"I looked across the street and I seen the little girl and the mom had got in the car and she had backed up and I was hollering to tell her the baby, the baby and before I knew it, she was up underneath the car," Shelley said .

The girl was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center.
