POWHATAN -- A Shenandoah Valley man was named champion this weekend at the Virginia Auctioneers Association's 36th Annual State Champion Auctioneer Contest.

Ben Svonavec from Mount Sidney won the top prize against thirteen other people this weekend in Powhatan. This was his first time competing in the event and he says he looks forward to serving the Virginia Auctioneers Association.

"There are a lot of good guys that will guide me the right way and what my thoughts are I am going to do the best job I can to be an ambassador for the organization, " Ben said moments after winning the award.

The auctioneers were graded on chant, rhythm, presence, and auction ability.
