CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Seventy-eight people became U.S. citizens at the annual Fourth of July naturalization ceremony at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.

Musician Dave Matthews gave the keynote address. He reminded the audience that the United States is a nation of immigrants, and that some fled tyranny while others were brought here against their will.

Matthews is a native of South Africa who became a naturalized citizen himself in 1980. He formed his band in Charlottesville in 1991.

The Daily Progress reports that the 78 who took the U.S. oath of allegiance Thursday came from 36 different countries. They joined more than 3,000 others who have been naturalized at Monticello since 1963.
