Need for Blood Donations Increases during Summer

Updated: Fri 7:18 PM, Jun 29, 2012

Hospitals see more accidents in the summer so the need for blood is even greater than during the rest of the year.

Virginia Blood Services needs 400 donations a day to fill the needs of the state. The organization set up a blood mobile bus at Rockingham Memorial Hospital to try to get more donations Friday.

A spokesperson said the summer is the toughest time to get donors since many people are away on vacation. They also get plenty of donations from students during the academic year but many students leave the area during summer break.

One donor said it felt good to give blood to help others, especially with something that is so easy to do.

"The Virginia Blood Services give you food, drinks, anything you need to make you feel comfortable. I don't feel any different than 15 minutes ago when I started giving blood," said Amanda Parezo, a blood donor.

The most-needed blood type is O-negative since it can help anyone with any blood type.
