BROADWAY, Va.-- Nearly 100 neighbors attended a candlelight vigil in support of Sam Whetzel and his family.

Family friend Sharon Skates said the 12-year-old boy from Broadway has been battling with cancer for 15 months.

The vigil comes after the family posted on the 'We Support Sam' Facebook page on Friday it expected the end soon.

Skates said Sam's classmates and teachers from Frank Hillyard's middle school attended the vigil. As well as his family members and friends.

Neighbors remember Sam's strength through songs, words and prayers.

Skates said the community has rallied with Sam through his battle with cancer. She said they want the family to know they are not alone.

" It warms my heart to see the community come together like this. I'm thrilled that we are here to support each other as well as the Whetzel family," said

Other people who did not attend the vigil, posted pictures of candles on the Facebook support page.
