STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- For Martin Luther King Jr. Day, neighbors across the Valley honored the life and legacy of the civil rights pioneer.

Some also reflected on how far we've come in the decades since his "I Have a Dream" speech.

It's been more than 50 years since the March on Washington and King's famous speech, but one local black leader said there's still work to be done.

"If we continue to do as he has laid the groundwork, the foundation before us, we must, in order to get rid of the hatred, we've got to show love," said Clarence Durrette, with the Staunton Chapter of the NAACP.

Tributes today across the country, included a wreath-laying at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C, to remember the man who dared to have a dream about equality.

Events will also be happening in Staunton to remember King.

"The march, the service, are a signal of our commitment to those values and ideals. Values of justice, mercy, tolerance, compassion, all of those and many more were near and dear to King's heart and the civil rights movement in general," said Dr. Jim Gilman, a professor at Mary Baldwin College.

A candlelight march happened at the Central United Methodist Church earlier this evening and a memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend.
