STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Eight candidates were running for the three open seats on the Staunton City Council.

Carolyn Dull, the city's vice-mayor, won another term on council, while R. Terry Holmes and Walter Obenschain will also join council.

The winning candidates celebrated Tuesday night in Staunton after a hard-fought campaign.

The newly-elected members are ready to get to work, but took time Tuesday night to enjoy their victory.

"I promise to work as hard as I possibly can to make Staunton the best place in the world to live," said Carolyn Dull.

"I'm going to be learning a lot new stuff, but that in itself has been very... It's really just fired me up. So I'm looking forward to that," said R. Terry Holmes.

"I'm extremely elated, ready to go to work, as I have been. Just thankful to get the opportunity to represent all the citizens here in Staunton," said Walter Obenschain.

The highly contested race drew a lot of attention and more voters than in other areas in the Valley.

Turnout was 17 percent across the city, according to numbers from the registrar.
