HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Wednesday night, some people living in the Townes of Wellington Park could not get home.
"We came back and then there was just a line of cops and they had it blocked off at both entrances and they said keep moving, you're not staying here tonight," said Benjamin Miller, who lives in the development.
"The Harrisonburg Police Department responded to the area of Old Furnace Road around 8 o'clock to check on the well being of a man who had threatened to harm himself, officers were provided information that this individual was also armed," said Mary-Hope Vass, who is Harrisonburg's Public Information Officer.
The man was eventually taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital (RMH) for a mental evaluation.
"We quickly came out, then we got in our car and then we left," said Isaac Woo, who is the man's neighbor.
Many people on Facebook wrote comments saying the police action was excessive.
"I understand trying to prevent any harm but HPD, HFD, VSP, and Staunton PD were needed? Seems a little excessive," said a woman in a comment.
"It's good to know that in a dangerous situation there is that volume of law enforcement that will come in a moments notice," said Miller who disagrees with the comment made on Facebook.
Woo says he never detected any problems with his neighbor before the incident.
"I feel sorry for him, but we didn't know about it. We couldn't notice. He looked like a good neighbor," said Woo.
