AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- On Saturday, June 7, Virginia State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-81. The crash occurred at 2:35 p.m. near the 230 mile marker in Augusta County.
Northbound traffic on I-81 was slowing when a U-haul truck failed to slow and brake in time. The U-haul struck a GMC Sierra. The impact caused the GMC to overturn onto its roof. The U-haul then struck a Toyota Camry.
The driver of the U-haul, Kevin Baer, 57, of Moneta, Va., was transported to Augusta Medical and then flown on to University of Virginia (UVA) Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Baer is currently in stable condition at UVA.
The driver of the GMC, George Schimmel of New Market, Va., was treated and released from Augusta Medical.
The GMC passenger, Patricia Schimmel, was flown to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious. Both Schimmels were wearing seat belts.
The driver of the Camry was not injured.
Baer was charged with DUI. Additional charges are pending.
The crash remains under investigation.
