New List Shows Car Thieves' Favorite Targets

STAUNTON -- The Highway Loss Data Institute has released a new list of the cars that thieves target most often.

The list is based on the highest rate of insurance claims for theft.

The cars most likely to be stolen, or stolen from are all pickup trucks and SUVs. At the top of the list: the Ford F-250 crew cab, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab and Ford F-350 crew cab.

But owners of these cars in the valley should not worry too much about a big change to their insurance, said Jeremy Warner, an insurance agent in Staunton.

"In this area I think the impact is going to be relatively minor, because we don't have a high theft rate around here. If you lived in the D.C. area, certainly a bigger impact."

Here in the valley, Warner says, car theft accounts for about five percent of drivers' premiums.
