HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Fifty people in the Valley started work today at Virginia's only organic poultry processing plant.
The new employees that started Tuesday at Shenandoah Processing said it's so special to start with this company from the ground up.
"From being from the floor up in a new company, that gives me the opportunity to grow and establish my career," said Richard Gibbs, who will do all the work with the waste water treatment plant.
Gibbs and 49 others are starting their first day on the job.
Even though the poultry processing plant isn't running yet, everyone is already hard at work preparing the equipment.
The building used to house a turkey plant; however,it had been empty for years.
The production will start slow at first, but owners plan to hire more people once they are open for business.
Gibbs is excited for the possibilities.
"The job market is pretty tough because I've been impounding a payment for about a year or so. Things were slow and doing the kind of work I like to do was hard to find. This was a great opportunity. I heard about it, I applied for it and it worked out pretty good for me," said Gibbs.
Shenandoah Processing plans on bringing the chickens in on Thursday.
