STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV)-- When you pull up to a parking garage in downtown Staunton, you'll see new signs put up in the parking garages, so when you get a ticket you'll know how much you have to pay as the rates are increasing.
Staunton City Council approved the rate increases in June. They will go into effect on July 1.
In the garages, Wharf Lot and Augusta Street Lot, you'll pay $1 an hour or $6 for the whole day. Metered parking is up to 50 cents an hour or $5 for the entire day.
It's all to cover city debt and the cost of new parking equipment. Despite the initial public concern, business owners said they're not worried about downtown parking spaces being filled.
"I think that will more effect people who are downtown all day like employees and people in the various offices - not so much the shoppers," said Ron Ramsey, the owner of Bookworks.
Ramsey said he expects to see customers continue to come in, despite the price changes.
"We have the free on-street parking that's two hours. That's usually all people are using,” he added.
The next time you travel to downtown Staunton, make sure you have a little extra cash on hand.
