STAUNTON-- A new restaurant is set to open at the old location of Shoney's. The restaurant will be opened by two former employees, and will be called Hometown Grill & Buffet.
Belinda Shrewsbury and her husband are the new owners. She is a former waitress there, and he is the former general manager. The two plan on rehiring the employees who lost their jobs when Shoney's closed in April.
Many didn't know what to do after getting laid off. "Oh my God. My boss and his wife are a God gift to all of us. If it wasn't for them, God knows what direction we'd be heading in," said Jaythea Dunson, who worked there for over seven years.
Shrewsbury said the community missed the restaurant, and there is a strong family connection between employees and customers. "We've got a really good group of employees who lost their jobs. The community has reached out to us. We want to do something to open back up," she said.
The new restaurant will have a similar menu compared to Shoney's, but there will be some changes. The owners plan on opening it back up in late May.
In the meantime, former employees are volunteering to renovate it.
