New Safety Changes Bring More Families to Local Park

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Kids and families in Harrisonburg want to check out the new playground renovations at Westover Park.

Leaders with the park said some of the equipment did not meet safety requirements and the new equipment, which cost about $140,000 is now safer for children visiting the park. The plans for the upgrade have been a work in progress for more than a year.

The park received money from the Harrisonburg Housing and Urban Development Group.

Stephanie Zucconi, a local mother, said in addition to safer gear, she enjoys having equipment geared towards older children.

"A big concern for us is just finding equipment small enough for our children. I like that they have two different sizes so [the kids] can stay here longer and keep coming back," said Zucconi.

By mid-July, they also plan to make the park more handicap friendly by installing more parking spaces and a paved sidewalk.
