STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- A couple in New York faces animal cruelty charges after police said they neutered a friend's dog and cat.

According to police, the couple was neutering the animals for a friend who didn't want to pay a vet for the surgery.

Police said both animals needed lots of work done to fix the botched amateur surgeries.

The couple in New York is in jail awaiting a court appearance on Monday.

Here in the Valley there are legitimate places you can get your pet spayed and neutered at a low cost.

Debbie Caywood, the director of the Augusta Regional SPCA said you shouldn't treat animal surgery any differently than human surgery.

"It's just like in human services. If you need surgery you would go to a licensed physician. With our animals it would be the same thing. We wouldn't want to put our animals at risk or in the hands of someone who is not a licensed veterinarian or a licensed Vet Tech," said Caywood.

At the Augusta Regional SPCA, the adoption fee includes spaying and neutering.
