HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter is caring for seven newborn puppies that were found in trash bags in a storm drain.

A postal worker heard noises from the drain and found the puppies on Saturday. He then called the shelter.

Humane officer Robert Beckner tells media outlets that the puppies were rescued and taken to the shelter. They've been placed with a female dog that's breastfeeding other puppies.

An eighth puppy died. Beckner says he doesn't know if it was stillborn or died after being put in the drain.

The puppies will be available for adoption in six weeks.

Meanwhile, three kittens found in a bag outside a grocery store in Charleston last week have died. A fourth kitten survived.
