WEYERS CAVE -- On Friday, Frontier Airlines announced that its nonstop flight from the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, SHD, to Orlando will be suspended in April.

A few months ago, airline officials said Frontier would stop selling flights past April. SHD launched the airline service in 2012.

Greg Campbel, SHD's executive director, said the decision was based on Frontier's statistics. He said fewer people choose to fly to Orlando during the summer months.

Frontier Airlines could take what's called a “seasonal departure,” which means the airline could return later this fall.

Campbell said some good deals are still available.

“We just want to make sure the community takes advantage of that between now and April 7th. That'll position us at our best chance to get the service picked back up in the fall,” said Campbel.

Campbel said passenger numbers for Frontier are strong and people in the Valley can help determine the future of Frontier.

He said some flights in March are already booked during spring break and he's optimistic about Frontier returning.
