NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A new statue at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is intended to inspire visitors to think about environmental stewardship.
The work of art by local artist Angie VanDyke was dedicated Friday at the zoo's Eagle Scout Rain Garden. Compressed plastic disks donated by the Navy symbolize drops of rain and hang from a frame made of recycled steel train rail.
According to zoo officials, plastic waste is one of the fastest growing threats to the marine environment. The Navy minimizes that threat by compressing plastic waste from ships at sea, then bringing the plastic disks back to shore where most of the waste is converted into energy or recycled.
