State Senator Mark Obenshain (R- Harrisonburg) discussed for the first time with News 3, the reason behind voting in favor of a redistricting plan.
The controversial bill did not pass but it would have given the GOP a significant advantage.
According to Obenshain, the redistricting plan would have put communities back together.
He said the current districts separate communities into three or four districts.
For Obenshain, the measure would have allowed people with shared interests to have common representation.
For example, he said one senator has to drive four hours to get from one end of his district to another.
"The people on one end of that district don't have anything in common with the west end of that district and it doesn't do them a service to have a political process that draws ugly districts like that just to achieve some political in," said Obenshain.
He said if this would have passed some lawmakers who are currently in office would not have been there for another term.
