AUGUSTA COUNTY -- One man is trying to make good on a promise. VDOT presented its plans to the Augusta County Board of Supervisors Wednesday night and one man is fighting to get one neighborhood a road.

For more than two years, Hansford Johnson has talked to a number of people trying to get Fountain Cave Road paved. It's a small country road where some say they've had big problems.

He's been getting signatures for a petition while trying to a keep promise he made to his late friend Charlie Good.

"He said I couldn't get anything done so I'm asking you. So I said OK I feel real honored to do it," said Johnson.

Johnson has collected 35 signatures to pave Founatin Cave Road. The conditions are so bad that someone has to keep putting gravel on the road to keep it stable.

"It's dirt and the time I have visited the road they have big pot holes it's still dusty and dust all over the place," said Johnson.

Johnson lives in Waynesboro now but others who live on the country road are in full support.

Mike Long lives on Fountain Cave Road and said the gravel is the main issue.

"It's amazing how after a week you put that gravel down and it disappered. It's gone. We put all that trouble to put that gravel down and all that money that you put into there, and it's gone. Within a week. I lived there I know it," said Long

Fountain Cave Road is very narrow. It's mostly dirt and kicks up a lot of dust. The constant adding of gravel have had its fair share of flat tires.

"It looks like it going to be probably another few years but we just have to get it started that's all," said Johnson.

All the funds for the 2013 budget for the VDOT project have already been spoken for. The board of supervisors said they could use maintenance funds to pave the road but they must first prioritize other matters.
