HARRISONBURG -- Wednesday night people in Harrisonburg marched around Court Square remembering the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

People said if that march never happened, things here in the Valley would be different.

"I think it's really cool that people still care about it even after 50 years. I think it would be easy to say 'Jim Crow laws don't apply anymore so we don't need to relive any of this.' But instead all these people came out here," said ceremony attendee Mary Zook.

Those who went to the original March on Washington offered memories of that monumental day. Some even read excerpts from the 'I Have a Dream Speech'.

Many reflected on their own lives and how it would have been different if the march never took place.

"I think our society would be totally different if it had one type of people and I think it's better just the way it is because we are getting to talk to different people from different countries, different religions and different backgrounds," said ceremony attendee Joy Najroge.

"Be encouraged. Even though we still have disagreements, even though we have differing points of view at times. At least today it isn't always based on race," said ceremony attendee Anthony Bailey.

Many people who attended the ceremony said that it was amazing to see all kinds of people come together for the special event.
