HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Online medical care is available in other states, but now you can receive medical care online without stepping foot in the doctor's office.
Virtuwell lets nurse practitioners prescribe everyday medications to patients based on their symptoms. It works by asking simple questions through a questionnaire, giving the patient a treatment plan based on their diagnosis.
The big danger lies in misdiagnoses. According to some doctors, the program could be beneficial to some patients, but there is no replacement for physical care.
"People who are not in the medical community think that medicine is maybe perhaps simple even for something as mundane as a sore throat, but there's a lot of things that can cause a sore throat that are actually quite dangerous and if you're not right there you can miss it," said Dr. Gregory Jesteadt, Family Physician at Harrisonburg Family Practice.
To use the service you have to pay a flat fee of $45 or less per online consultation, depending on what type of insurance you have.
