Panel Member Discusses Gun Violence Forum

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Gun violence is in the national spotlight and it's also something that will be addresed Wednesday night in Harrisonburg.

People from the community are invited to a public forum about reducing gun violence. The event is sponsored by a local chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.

Panel member Robin McNallie said that the panel is made up of a variety of individuals, including an attorney, a police officer and a mental health support coordinator.

Mcnallie said that way there will be different perspectives about gun use.

The forum starts at 7 p.m. and will look at misperceptions about gun ownership.

Forum members will also break down President Barack Obama's recent gun proposals. Locally, Mcnallie believes that Harrisonburg is a pretty safe community.

McNallie will also talk about gun myths. He is going to break down what he thinks the second amendment meant in the 18th century.

"People really need to know what the second amendment is saying in regard to the whole context of the times and the whole context of the constitution. I think one of the issues is how much relevance does the second amendment have to the modern age," McNallie said.

The forum is free and will be held at the Harrisonburg City Council chambers on South Main street.
