While many school districts in the valley are facing tough cuts, Harrisonburg schools have extra money in their budget, and some of it may go to their teachers.
The school board wants to give their teachers a 2% raise next year. The money comes from $900,000 left in the budget. That's because the state gave Harrisonburg more money for higher enrollment. They've also successfully managed their funds.
City council will have the final say, and they plan to approve it if they can.
"We're very careful about not stepping on the toes of our educators because the school board has that expertise and I think they've demonstrated that over the years," said Harrisonburg City Council Member, Charles Chenault.
Even though the raise would equal between $3 and $7 a day. Many feel it's a step in the right direction. Another option is to give teachers a one time bonus: which might save money in the long run.
