WAYNESBORO, Va -- Trash, clothes, and bugs fill an apartment building on Port Republic Road in Waynesboro.
Michelle Loanon's mother lived in one of the apartments, but was too upset to speak about the situation.
"It's really nasty with all the bugs and everything literally coming out the walls and stuff. They shouldn't have been rented out to anybody on low income or not," said Loanon.
Loanon blames the landlord for the condition her mom had to live in.
"When something needed to be done, they didn't take care of it like they should," said Loanon.
Patty Armstrong is the property maintenance inspector for Waynesboro.
She says a complaint from a past tenant and several calls for police led to her investigation.
"Fresh fecal, old fecal, urine, roaches were everywhere, even on the exterior of the building. The police have responded over 240 times since 2011 and so for everyone's safety, it was best to condemn the building," said Armstrong.
The city says that most of the people who lived here have places to stay for now.
Loanon is hoping for the best for her mom and others here.
"I just hope out of all this mess that something good comes out of it for everybody, because a lot of people were my friends here and it's sad to see them go somewhere else," said Loanon.
The owner of the building is being cooperative while the city is looking into the matter.
We contacted owner of the building for comment and we're waiting to hear back.
