The Harrisonburg Planning Commission met to discuss an ordinance amendment. The change would allow a home business to grow fruits and vegetables.
JMU students Sam Frere and Dan Warren want to grow fruits and vegetables in their yard on Collicello Street. They plan to then sell them to local restaurants.
This is part of the growing national trend of urban farming, but under the current city ordinance, you can have a home business as long as its inside a building, but this venture is outside.
The city planning commission took up the issue at Wednesday night's meeting.
Several people in favor of making an exception to the rule made their voices heard.
Only one person spoke opposed to it.
In the end, the commission decided to remove this from consideration. The members plan to do more research and bring a new proposal as early as January.
