Police Could Increase Patrols when JMU Students Return to Campus

HARRISONBURG, Va.--- The Harrisonburg Police Department is prepared to respond to some extra calls as James Madison University students come back this weekend.

Traffic started to pick up on Port Republic Road on Saturday.

Sergeant William Keller said with more car and pedestrians traffic, the number of incidents increases.

He said officers will patrol their designated areas. On weekends, there could be more officers near student housing.

"There is a big influx of students and they will beef up the areas provide extra security for people so tonight you could have three to seven people assigned to an area, depending on the needs," said Keller.

Keller recommends pedestrians not walk into traffic and that drivers watch out for those crossing the street.
