Waynesboro -- The Waynesboro Police Department announced Wednesday that its conducting a homicide investigation in connection with a July death.
Police responded to the 1200 block of Wine Avenue on July 28 for a report of an assault.
Upon arrival, police found 52-year-old Joseph Clark Bickers severely injured.
Officers talked to Bickers before he was taken to Augusta Health. Police say he provided a short account of what happened and a description and nickname of the suspect.
After arriving at Augusta Health, Bickers was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with severe head trauma.
He died on Aug. 1.
Police say they have identified the suspect as a 52-year-old Staunton resident. They have not released his name.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed. They are awaiting a report from the Office of the Medical Examiner.
