HARRISONBURG -- The Harrisonburg Police Department is looking for a woman suspected of using stolen credit cards at stores in Harrisonburg.

HPD said the woman stole a purse from another woman at National College in Harrisonburg about a month ago.

The suspect used the cards at department stores in Harrisonburg like Best Buy and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Some shoppers say they're not surprised someone would do this.

"It's really sad that somebody would do that to somebody," Debbie Carroll said.

HPD criminal investigator Chris Rush said this is just one of many credit card theft cases in the area.

"Not just us, but numerous different departments throughout the U.S. are seeing kind of a steady increase in the identity theft and in the different kinds of bank account frauds that are out there," Rush said.

Rush advises you to check your statements regularly just in case someone steals your credit card information.

Rush also said you should be cautious of your surroundings and make sure you lock your car when you go shopping.

"I think you do have to be alert and really watch," Carrol said.

Rush said the suspect could face several felony charges for credit card theft.
