Grottoes, VA - UPDATE: 5:30 p.m. 3/4/2014
The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office used their SWAT team Tuesday afternoon to help Grottoes Police arrest a suspect in this case.

The Suburban owned by the Grottoes Fire Department turned up missing around between midnight and 5:30 Tuesday morning. There is an empty truck bay in the Grottoes Fire Department garage where the vehicle usually sits.

After posting to social media on their page as well as the WHSV page, the department was able to find the stolen vehicle abandoned in the Pineville area of Rockingham County .

Stella Barr lives across the street from the department and has for more than 30 years. She says it's surprising that something like this would happen here, and she thinks crime is going up in the area..

"It's kind of shocking, actually. This small town is really kind of quiet. Definitely think it's gone up. Even in a small town like this, I definitely think it's gone up," she shared.

The vehicle is being detained by the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. The vehicle is reported to have minor to moderate damage.

There is no information regarding a suspect or suspects at this point.

From the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department Chief:

The Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department had a vehicle stolen from inside the Fire Station between midnight and 05:30 a.m. March 4, 2014

The Grottoes Police Department was notified initially by Fire Department Personnel.

The vehicle was subsequently noticed by citizens in Rockingham and Augusta Counties as driving erratically, this was reported to the Rockingham County ECC and then to the Grottoes Fire Department.

The vehicle has since been located abandoned in the Pineville area of Rockingham County .

The vehicle is being detained by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s office.

The vehicle is reported to have minor to moderate damage.

We have no information regarding a suspect or suspects at this point.

We will provide more information as the Police Departments make it available to us.

The Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the public for all their support during this event.


UPDATE: 11 a.m. 3/4/2014
The Grottoes Fire Department says their missing SUV has been found. They thank everyone who helped find it.

We're working on figuring out how that vehicle went missing and how it was found.


An SUV from the Grottoes Fire Department has been stolen, and they're trying to find the vehicle.

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center says a yellow Suburban was stolen Tuesday morning from Grottoes Fire Department.

It is labeled with "GROTTOES FIRE DEPARTMENT" and "SERV 200". As of 10 a.m., the vehicle was last seen in the Friedens Church area of Rockingham County.
