HARRISONBURG, Va.--- The Harrisonburg Police Department will have extra officers on patrol on St. Patrick's Day weekend.

There will be two extra patrol units on DUI enforcement and impaired driving on Friday and Saturday. In addition, drivers can expect DUI checkpoints throughout Harrisonburg on Monday.

Last year, HPD officers issued two DUI tickets on St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Sergeant Pete Ritchie Jr. says driving drunk could bring drivers extra costs beyond a ticket.

"It can be dangerous from running off the road in an accident, all the way up to actually hitting a pedestrian, causing injury [or] death," says Ritchie.

He recommends drivers who are going to drink, to call a cab or have a designated driver.
