HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The valley has had a number of political candidates in town campaigning in the last week.

Those candidates include Tareq Salahi who met with James Madison University students last week and Terry Mcauliffe, who will likely be representing the Democrats in the governors race.

Doctor Bob Roberts broke down why the valley will be some improtant the next election season and why we are all now seeing so many candidates.

Dr. Roberts said that there are Republicans visiting town who are running for lieutenant governor or attorney general because they are trying to garner support to get delegates.

Delegates will be selected at mass meetings between now and early April. They choose the Republican nominee for these offices at a convention in May.

Roberts said the area has a disproportionate impact on who is selected because of the effect of mass meetings in the counties.

Democratic candidates on the other hand are out campaigning as they look ahead to the fall of 2013.

They're preparing for a primary as opposed to choosing delegates.

When asked why so many conservatives are visiting since the majority of people in the surrounding counties already vote red, Dr. Roberts said it's all about getting support for the nomination.

"And this area has a very high percentage of motivated voters so if you're going to win the statewide race you've got to get your base out. And the base of the Republican base is this part of the state. So you're concerned with getting the nomination, but you're also concerned of making sure your voters get out to the polls in November," Dr. Roberts said.

Roberts said to expect more in the next month as Democrats campaign for primaries and the Republicans try to build candidates to be delegates.
