STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- A Gallup poll just released shows business leaders care more about a job candidate's knowledge and skills in a given field rather than a college or a particular major.

The same study found that the average American thinks businesses care about your college and major more than they actually do.

"I'm not surprised by this, because what they want, they want a candidate to fit, someone to walk in and fit exactly what they want, and sometimes that's difficult for an employer to find," said David Tysinger, an economist withe the Virginia Employment Commission.

Tysinger said it's important for job-seekers to stay up on their skills, especially when it comes to computers.
